How to Make Your June Wedding Last Forever
“A June bride is joyful, jubilant, and jolly well jovial.” – anonymous
It’s June! The air is warm and full of sweet scents, and wedding bells are ringing across the Western world. Speaking of which…why June? Why has June been the long-acknowledged unofficial wedding month? Is it just the lovely weather? We’ll get back to that, but in the meantime, let’s talk about preserving wedding heirlooms for generations who’ll come long after we’re gone.
Think Ahead: Put Heirloom Preservation on Your Wedding To-Do List
There’s so much that goes into planning a wedding that it’s natural to want to be done with it as soon as the reception is over. But alas, it’s far too easy to put off preserving all the beautiful objects from the day until…well, until it’s too late.
Of course each wedding is different, but most brides prioritize preserving one thing from their wedding: the gown.
Preserving Your Wedding Dress
The best place to start is the bridal shop where you bought the gown, as they’ll tend to have the best advice, as well as the lowdown on all the best professional service providers in your area. But otherwise, here are some general rules to follow:
-
- Have your dress cleaned right away. If it’s possible, assign this task to someone trustworthy before the day of the event so that you won’t have to worry about it.
- One option is to have your gown professionally preserved. It’s best to do this within a few weeks of the wedding, and again, it’s ideal to arrange for this ahead of time so you don’t have to deal with it while you enjoy your honeymoon!
- DON’T: store your wedding dress in plastic. It’s cheap, it’s easy, it’s everywhere, and it’s efficient, but plastic holds moisture and thus can cause mildew so…you get the picture.
- DO: store your wedding dress in an acid-free, airtight container. First, wrap the gown in color-free, acid-free tissue paper. Stuff the sleeves and bodice with the stuff as well, to help the dress maintain its shape. Keep the sealed container somewhere dry and not exposed to sunlight or moisture.
Open your own Heirloom Vault!
The best way to make absolutely certain that your family and loved ones have access to the memories you made on that day is to create an Heirloom Vault account. There, you can write detailed accounts of every special moment and all the things that made it uniquely yours for generations to come.
Oh, and as to why June is the traditional wedding month? There are a few theories, and the leading one relates to Juno, the Roman goddess for whom the month is named. She was married to Jupiter, the king of the gods, and was considered to be the protector of Roman women. The absolute truth of the tradition’s origins is lost to time…don’t let your precious wedding memories and heirlooms meet the same fate.
