There’s so much that goes into planning a wedding that it’s natural to want to be done with it as soon as the reception is over. But alas, it’s far too easy to put off preserving all the beautiful objects from the day until…well, until it’s too late. 

Of course each wedding is different, but most brides prioritize preserving one thing from their wedding: the gown.

Preserving Your  Wedding Dress

The best place to start is the bridal shop where you bought the gown, as they’ll tend to have the best advice, as well as the lowdown on all the best professional service providers in your area. But otherwise, here are some general rules to follow:

• • Have your dress cleaned right away. If it’s possible, assign this task to someone trustworthy before the day of the event so that you won’t have to worry about it.  
  • One option is to have your gown professionally preserved. It’s best to do this within a few weeks of the wedding, and again, it’s ideal to arrange for this ahead of time so you don’t have to deal with it while you enjoy your honeymoon!
  • DON’T: store your wedding dress in plastic. It’s cheap, it’s easy, it’s everywhere, and it’s efficient, but plastic holds moisture and thus can cause mildew so…you get the picture. 

• DO: store your wedding dress in an acid-free, airtight container. First, wrap the gown in color-free, acid-free tissue paper. Stuff the sleeves and bodice with the stuff as well, to help the dress maintain its shape. Keep the sealed container somewhere dry and not exposed to sunlight or moisture.
