Cultivating a new generation of family curators
Latest News
When it comes to family heirlooms, it seems that the general consensus is that the “younger generations” don’t want this stuff. While I’m sure there are a lot of younger folks that aren’t interested in their parents or grandparents treasures, could it be that they just aren’t interested YET? As we journey through life we have different priorities. We have different interests and different tastes. But just like the seasons, these things change with time. We change from the carefree little child, into the wild and crazy teenager, then, young adult wondering what we are going to do for the rest of our lives. Suddenly we are middle aged, perhaps with children of our own, and, if we are lucky enough, we settle into our golden years! Long story short, we evolve. We grow. We start to lose precious loved ones. Family, friends, those we never could image our lives without. Though these experiences we start to think about our own mortality, reflecting on our own place in this world and what legacy we will leave behind.
So while the “younger generation” may not be as enthusiastic about Grandpa’s hand-carved chess set as you are, give it some time. I can speak for myself when I recall that while in my 20’s and 30’s I wasn’t giving much thought to family heritage amid changing diapers, chasing toddlers and endless volunteering. Now, I am embracing and soaking up everything I can about my family’s history. So don’t give up hope on the younger generation just yet! Instead, tell them your stories. Share your memories. Through your example, it will enrich and strengthen their spirit of family. You are helping to create the next generation of family heritage enthusiasts!
If not, well at least you can rest easy knowing you gave it your best shot. Overall, my guess is, if it is important to you, it will be important to them. Some just don’t know it yet. Heirloom Vault provides the perfect way to document your family heirloom stories you wish to pass on to the next generation. Getting started is easy and it’s free! Learn more here
