What do you think of when you see this rock? An ordinary rock? A pretty green rock? Well, for some reason, I like rocks. I find them unique, beautiful and wonders of this beautiful Earth. To me, rocks are natural treasures. Now, this particular rock, I consider a family heirloom. Let me explain. Turns out my grandfather had a thing for rocks also. He had a collection of various rocks strategically placed all around his home, mostly on the outside. I recall a large and sturdy rock that stood proudly in the yard by the front door.

The memory of my grandpa is that he was the sweetest, kindest and funniest man I ever knew.  I cherish memories of visiting him when I was a child.  He passed away when I was just 13.  I am now 50 but my memory of him stays dear to my heart.  When he passed away, I asked if I could have this green rock. I don’t know why.  I just liked it I guess. I have kept it all these years.  I displayed it in my flower gardens at various homes I have lived in.  Most recently, I have brought it inside and put it on display with some other rocks I have now collected.

While it may seem like “just a rock” it is truly a family heirloom to me. When I hold it, gaze at it and admire it’s beauty, it makes me think of my grandpa whom I loved so much and miss so dearly. It just goes to show that a family heirloom doesn’t necessarily mean an old antique or a valuable piece of jewelry. I am not sure what became of the other rocks in his collection, particularly the large rock by the front door.  But I do know that it is not there anymore. I have asked other family members and no one seems to know. I wonder if whoever took it knows the story.
